Photo of Angela Smith Angela C.L. Smith has worked with City Connect Detroit since January 2006. She first entered the organization as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer, assisting with City Connect Detroit’s portfolio of collaboratives. After coming on board full time in February 2007 as a program associate, Angela has taken the collaborative world by storm and currently holds the title Program Officer. She currently serves as champion of the Growing Well collaborative, a partnership of public, private and nonprofit organizations in the Detroit area working to create an environment in which Detroit’s youth may acquire the habits and experiences necessary to develop into healthy adults. Angela also lends her grant writing capabilities, strategic planning and thought to several other collaboratives, including the African American Business Alliance, Mentoring, African American Culture Coalition, Food and Fitness, and Mayor’s Philanthropy among others.

Prior to her post at City Connect Detroit, Angela served as Project Director for FACTER, Flint Area Citizens To End Racism, where she was responsible for management of seven action teams that dealt with racism in the areas of housing, youth, education, faith, regional politics, communication and health. She also has several years of experience working with youth as a summer day camp counselor and summer day camp director with the United Methodist Church.

A native Detroiter, Angela received her Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan, her Bachelors’ degree in Sociology from Adrian College and was a graduate of Cass Technical High School.

Angela has been singing since her days of watching Sesame Street. When she’s not reading or singing with her church choir, you may find Angela facilitating racism and diversity workshops for colleges, churches and youth groups. Angela also sits on the Board of Directors for the Young Leader's Initiative, a youth development and mission work program affiliated with the Detroit Conference of the United Methodist Church. She currently resides in Highland Park with her husband and growing family. They are members of Kingdom Builder's Christian Church in Southfield, Michigan. She loves reading, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.
