Coming to the organization as an intern, Marissa Craighead first began working with City Connect Detroit in 2006 and came on board full time the following April. As part of the Marketing and Communications team, she assists with marketing, communications, and public relations functions within the organization. This role allows her to work internally with City Connect Detroit’s collaborative arrangements, and to ensure consistent messages about the organization, collaborative work and impact in the community reach the public through the City Connect Detroit website, communication pieces, and events.

Before coming to the organization as an intern, Marissa worked as a Youth Development Specialist at YouthVille Detroit, a project of the Detroit Youth Foundation. In her capacity at YouthVille Detroit, she oversaw the Knowledge Center, tutoring students, conducting ACT and SAT prep lessons and managing volunteer tutors from the Wayne State University Honors Program. She also had a hand in developing and implementing programming for the youth and preparing marketing material for the facilities inaugural summer program. In the months following her transition back to Detroit, Marissa also worked as a marketing consultant to Huntington Motors, Ltd.

Marissa is a graduate of Howard University in Washington DC, where she earned her degree in International Business and Marketing. In addition to her time at Howard, Marissa studied abroad at Richmond University in London, England, taking history, world politics, and photography courses. Moving home and working at City Connect Detroit, Marissa loves the opportunity she has to see new developments first hand and contribute the in the fervor and new energy surrounding Detroit’s revival.

A closet artist, Marissa is passionate about expressing herself in different mediums including photography, painting, jewelry making and through writing. She loves to write, and has written a children’s book about Detroit and the 1967 riots. In addition to exploring the arts, Marissa loves exploring cities she’s never been to, taking the unbeaten path. In her travels she’s been across the United States, throughout Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean. Among her favorite US cities are New York City and Savannah, Georgia, which to her represent the best of both worlds of the hustle and bustle and laid back leisure, a nice balance that she tries to maintain in her own life.
