Susan B. Howbert
Program Director
Council of Michigan Foundations
Susan B. Howbert serves as Program Director of the Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF), a nonprofit association with more than 400 independent, family, community and corporate foundations, and corporate giving programs working together to strengthen, promote and increase philanthropy in Michigan.
Ms. Howbert works with Michigan’s family foundations, corporate foundations, and corporate giving programs statewide to provide technical assistance, educational programming, and meeting facilitation on governance, grantmaking and other philanthropic issues. She also is responsible for Southeast Michigan programming and manages CMF’s office in that region.
CMF is recognized for its outstanding programming and support of family foundations including the annual family foundations retreat, a week-end focused on philanthropy for all ages from 3 – 93 years of age.
On behalf of its corporate members, CMF partners with the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship to offer a variety of courses on topics of interest to corporate grantmakers. Having the courses offered locally and had a reduced cost has resulted in over 30 corporate CMF members in Southeast Michigan receiving Boston College’s certification.
Southeast Michigan programming includes Detroit Area Grantmakers (DAG), a popular monthly luncheon meeting. Approximately 60 grantmakers convene nine times a year to network and hear a speaker or panel on a timely philanthropic topic or regional issue.
Ms. Howbert currently serves on the following boards: City Connect Detroit, Detroit Public Television and Local Motion. Her career in philanthropy includes Contributions Analyst, Detroit Edison Foundation, and Principal, GrantRight, Inc.
The Council of Michigan Foundations is an association of foundations and corporations making grants for charitable purposes. CMF was founded in 1973 to strengthen, promote and increase philanthropy in Michigan.
