Maternal and Child Health Conference Planned in Detroit

Local child and maternal health care providers will have an opportunity to earn continuing education credits and to hear from Linda Rae Murray, MD, MPH, former President of the American Public Health Association, on the changing landscape for public health workers at an upcoming conference in Detroit.

The Making an Impact: Maternal and Child Health Equity Conference is planned for March 27, 2012 between 8:30 am and 4 pm at Marygrove College in Detroit. Workshops and guest speakers are planned as part of the conference, including Dr. Murray and specialists from the Michigan Department of Community Health, the University of Michigan, and Western Michigan University.

This conference is provided at no cost to participants, though registration is required. Registration may be completed through the Michigan Public Health Training Center, by following this link. An event flyer is available here.

A list of conference breakout sessions remains to be finalized, but the tentative schedule calls for workshops on the following topics:

- Navigating Community Mental Health

- Trends & Characteristics of a Changing Public Health Workforce

- Personnel Development for Best Practice Models

- Social Media in Action

- Difficult Conversations with Difficult People

“We are so glad to have the opportunity to help pull something like this together,” said Dierk Hall, President and CEO of City Connect Detroit. “Not only does this event help improve local health care practice, it also makes the region more competitive for local, state, and national funding opportunities that will further improve our maternal and child heath systems. Also, we think this is a great demonstration of what our partnership with the University of Michigan and other community groups can really do to benefit this community.”
